Rites

My inquiry into The Last Judgment inevitably led to death rites. Each of these carbon ash and incense drawings records the contours of soldiers as shadows. They were inspired by the solemnity of the English burial service consecration, “Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”  When the entire group is installed in a grid, the inscrutable expression of each soldier’s fate becomes a poignant marker, like the regular rows of headstones at the Arlington National Cemetery.

There are over 100 drawings in the series.
