Epic Oils

2006-2010

Narrative painting and its capacity to communicate aspects of the human condition interests me. The Epic series can be seen as a meditation on national and private histories, on normative and recluse mythologies, on the stories we tell others and whisper to ourselves. They represent liminal events, both fact and fable, that happen in the in-between places. They happen in mid air and in cluttered alleys, on foamy shores and creaky bridges.  Like ostinatos in music, certain characters or figures persist and reappear in these paintings, as they do in the attendant Epic drawings.
